Slowly but surely!
After three weeks or so of peace and quiet, you will be back in your classrooms in a few days now. If you do not feel so motivated about resuming work, your learners must feel even less so? You will therefore be responsible for instilling in them the desire to wake up every morning and sit on the school bench! But this will not be easy if you do not want to resume work yourself! So make the most of the few days left at home to rest and be ready to face your pupils again as from next Monday.
This is the home straight before the end of year holidays but it is also the last few weeks before the final exams. So you should take this opportunity to check with your pupils if they have acquired the right knowledge, skills and methodology to succeed in their exams. It will be totally useless to rush into making sure you finish the syllabus if most pupils have not understood the basics. You may even have to take a small group aside in order to go more in-depth on specific topics that some may not have totally mastered.
The beginning of the third term is a great time to stop and reflect on what has gone wrong during the year and take remedial action. It is the only way of making sure you gave all your pupils the same chances to face their exams and adapt properly as they move up a class next year.
Taking the first weeks of the term to review some topics is even more important as it will also give time to pupils to slowly link back with school after their holidays and put them in a better frame of mind to face the last months. It may not be very useful to cram your students? heads full as they resume school, as it may simply lead them into a mental block ? instead of motivating them!
