■ RACE 1 ? THE CHEQUERS CUP

At the start Grosvenor Square, Got The Pace, New Recruit and Rivers of Babylon were slow out, all losing about one length. Nyathi jumped awkwardly, brushing Got The Pace which was afterwards inconvenienced off the heels of Dougan when the latter shifted in. Near the 1900 metres Double Lock had to be steadied when Golden Rambo shifted in. Jockey Teeha was shown the video of the incident, issued with a warning and told to allow room on his inside when shifting in. From shortly after the start New Recruit over-raced when racing tight between Real Caliz and Got The Pace and passing the 1300 metres was eventually taken out and allowed to race to the lead. Double Lock and Wise Owl over-raced near the 1700 metres with the latter being taken out off the heels of Golden Rambo. At the 1000 metres Dougan raced fiercely off the heels of New Recruit and had to be eased near the 500 metres and again approaching the 400 metres. Near the 300 metres Dougan shifted in abruptly, crowding New Recruit which bumped the running rails and became very badly unbalanced. Turtleback, which was following, was inconvenienced and had to be taken out. Jockey Rawa reported that Dougan hung in badly throughout the race and was very difficult to control. When questioned about the poor performance of Dougan Jockey Rawa explained that his mount hung in badly throughout the race and proved difficult to control and when asked for an effort at about the 400 metres failed to respond to his urgings. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Dougan was suffering from a deep cut to the off hind fetlock and that New Recruit was badly lame. In view of this report, trainers V. Allet and B. Gujadhur were told that their respective horses will need a veterinary certificate of fitness and soundness before being allowed to race again. At an inquiry into the riding of Turtleback, Jockey Bundhoo was asked why he had not bridged the gap in the back straight when in last position. He explained that from the 1000 metres his horse started to drop out and since at trackwork Turtleback usually shifts out abruptly at this spot, he thought against using his whip and rather decided to squeeze the horse with his feet in order to get it to pick up the bit again. Near the 800 metres the horse eventually picked up the bit and bridged the gap near the 600 metres. Trainer R. Gujadhur said that Turtleback is temperamental and confirmed that the horse has the habit of shifting out abruptly at trackwork when on the outside of horses. He added that he decided against racing it in blinkers this time out as Turtleback had raced without them at the end of his South African career and had run on strongly. Since the horse was disappointing on Saturday without the said equipment, hence he will try side winkers on it at its next start and will instruct his jockey to have it racing midfield. After considering the evidence, it was decided not to proceed further.

Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Got The Pace and Nyathi prior to the race and from Golden Rambo prior to and after the race.

■ RACE 2 ? THE STRIDENT CUP

Near the 1300 metres In A Heart Beat, which had a tendency to hang in, shifted in resulting in Rue Royale having to be steadied. Near the 1200 metres Cedar Falls was steadied off the heels of Century Lad. Cedar Falls and In A Heart Beat raced wide on the final turn. Near the 100 metres Royal Dome had to be taken in off the heels of Extreme Force in order to obtain a clear run. In the final straight Collect The Cash had a tendency to hang in and near the100 metres had to be taken out to avoid the heels of Extreme Force. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Colby was badly lame on the off hind leg. In view of this, trainer C. Ramdin was told that this horse will need a veterinary certificate of fitness before being allowed to race again. At an inquiry into the riding of horse Cedar Falls, jockey Herholdt was asked why after the start he took so long to place his horse closer to the fence. He explained that he had to wait for In A Heart Beat to move forward to get in behind it. He was told that in future he was expected to ease his mount and shifted in earlier than he did on this occasion. Furthermore, he was asked why he had moved out near the 600 metres when his horse was travelling well behind In A Heart Beat. He stated that his horse was travelling well and he elected to take it out in the clear for an interrupted run. Jockey Herholdt was told that his ride was of concern to the Stewards and that he is expected to ride his horses so as to leave no room for query.

Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Extreme Force, Colby, Century Lad and Collect The Cash prior to the race and from Royal Dome after the race.

■ RACE 3 ? THE J. EDOUARD BRUNEL CUP

At the start Iwe Spiwe was slow out, Vampire Jet jumped awkwardly, shifted out brushing Arabian Scent on its near hindquarter. Shortly after the start Sentinal stumbled. Passing the 1300 metres Iwe Spiwe, when being settled, threw its head up in the air over some distance and was eventually eased off the heels of Grand Duke, which had shifted in, when insufficiently clear. Jockey Stewart was shown the video of the incident, warned and told to exercise care when shifting ground. From the 1100 metres to the 900 metres Iwe Spiwe over-raced and, when being settled, threw its head up. National Express raced wide throughout. Grand Duke was taken out for a run at the 400 metres and raced wide rounding the home turn. Passing the 300 metres, Arabian Scent was accidentally struck on the face by jockey Rawa?s whip. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that an endoscopic examination was performed on Grand Duke after the race and it was found to have a cut in the mucosa of the nasal cavity. Trainer S. Henry was told that Grand Duke will need to obtain a certificate of fitness before being allowed to race again. The Stewards questioned jockey Neisius in relation to the poor performance of horse Arabian Scent as compared to its last race where it was a winner. He explained that at its last start, his mount had been able to obtain a good position behind the leader and had relaxed very well during the race and accelerated well in the final straight when asked for an effort. Today, it was caught wide of runners and over-raced up to the 800 metres, and when asked for an effort, it never quickened as it did last time and was very disappointing.

■ RACE 4 ? THE DHANKUWAR GUJADHUR CUP

Aquavit stumbled badly shortly after the start, shifted out, brushing Monomotapa. Shortly after, Monomotapa had to be eased from Aquavit shifted out slightly and Press Line shifting in. Jockey Herholdt was shown the video of the incident and advised to show care at all times. Aquavit raced fiercely from the 1200 metres to the 500 metres and approaching the 900 metres was taken out off the heels of Noble Dancer. Over the final 50 metres, Road To Jerusalem shifted in and had to be taken out off the heels of Monomotapa.

Routine urine specimen was taken for analysis from Press Line after the race.

■ RACE 5 ? THE MAURITIUS JOCKEY CLUB CUP

Brandy-Pawnee was slow into stride and from the 500 metres was taken out for a run, racing wide rounding the home turn. At an inquiry into an incident, jockey Daniels (Kilto) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (c) in that passing the 300 metres he carelessly allowed his mount to shift in resulting in Medal Ceremony on his inside having to be checked. In assessing penalty, the Stewards considered jockey Daniels?s guilty plea and since it was his first offence, he was fined Rs 10,000. Kilto hung out for most of the final straight. Jockey Daniels was shown the video of the incident and told to straighten his mounts when they shift ground.

■ RACE 6 ? THE CYRILLE DE LABAUVE D?ARIFAT CUP

At the start Weekender threw its head up, was slow out, losing about one length and shortly after shifted in, brushing the hindquarters of Keen To Win. Passing the 1400 metres, Weekender started racing fiercely and near the 1300 metres had to be checked off the heels of Woden. Near the 1000 metres, Keen To Win shifted out abruptly, inconveniencing Sugar Baron on its outside which had to be steadied. From the 450 metres Woden and The Duke Of Dixie were taken out for a run and raced wide rounding the home turn. Passing the 300 metres Woden shifted in slightly and brushed Sugar Baron which in turn moved in onto Rambo Rouge. Rambo Rouge then shifted in onto Hero?s Hope on its inside, in doing so Rambo Rouge was turned sideways inconveniencing Hero?s Hope over a short distance. Jockeys Herholdt and Joorawon were shown the video of the incident, jockey Herholdt was told to exercise care when shifting ground and jockey Joorawon was told that he is expected to straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. In the final straight The Duke Of Dixie hung in badly and proved very difficult to be properly assisted.

■ RACE 7 ? THE MAXIME BOULLE CUP

The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Alarming Swing was lame and unfit to race. Consequently, the horse was withdrawn at 9 a.m. on Friday. As a result, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened. Trainer B. Gujadhur was told that Alarming Swing will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again. At the start Icelandic and St. Austell were slow out and Mudslide Slim jumped awkwardly, all losing about one length. Passing the 900 metres when the pace slowed Romp In The Forum started racing fiercely and had to be steadied off the heels of Mainsail. Icelandic, which was following, was inconvenienced and also had to be steadied. Icelandic raced fiercely from the 1000 metres and passing the 700 metres, was taken out off the heels of Romp In The Forum and, in doing so, brushed What Price on its outside. Icelandic was then allowed to race to the lead. Jockey Stewart (Icelandic) was shown the video of this incident, issued with a warning and told to exercise care when shifting ground. Near the 350 metres, Romp In The Forum was eased over some distance. At an inquiry into this incident, it was established that Icelandic had shifted in slightly, taking Mainsail onto Romp In The Forum causing it to have to be eased. Jockey Stewart (Icelandic) was shown the video of the incident, issued with a warning and told to exercise care when shifting ground. Approaching the 300 metres St. Austell was taken out off the heels of Mainsail in order to obtain a clear run and raced wide rounding the home turn. Near the 300 metres Astrakhan came off the fence and when taken back in Mudslide Slim which was following had to be steadied. Jockey Brown was shown the video of the incident, was warned and told to show care at all times. The Club?s Veterinary Surgeon reported that Mainsail bled from both nostrils. In view of this report and, acting under Rule 166 (2) (c), trainer V. Allet was told that Mainsail has been suspended for one month and will need a veterinary clearance before being allowed to race again.

Routine urine specimens were taken for analysis from Kestrel, Mainsail and Express Mail prior to the race and from Romp In The Forum after the race.

■ RACE 8 ? THE NOBLE CHIEFTAIN PLATE

At an inquiry into an incident, jockey Stewart (Piper?s Promise) pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 161 (b) in that nearing the 1300 metres he took his horse out and caused an interference to Pardon A Prince, Red Rooney, Red Indian and Camp Delta which were racing on his outside resulting in Red Rooney being cramped for room and having to be checked badly. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey Stewart?s guilty plea and the fact that he was riding for the first time at the Champ-de-Mars, he was fined Rs 20,000. The Chief Veterinary Surgeon reported that Red Rooney was not striding out on both fores after the race. In view of this, trainer H. Maigrot was told that the horse will need a veterinary certificate of soundness before being allowed to race again.
