What you should KNOW?
● Has a final decision been taken to reduce traffic congestion in Port-Louis?
Yes, the plan to reduce traffic jams will start as from mid-June. The first step will be the demolition of the Caudan roundabout and its replacement by traffic lights. This is expected to ensure more fluid traffic before 11 am and after 3 pm.
● Where will motorists go during the works?
The Road Development Authority (RDA) has already organised traffic diversion plans during that period. However, the RDA gives the guarantee that these diversions will not cause more traffic jams during peak hours.
● What about other projects such as the bus lane or the light railway?
According to the RDA, the next budget should make provision for the bus lane between Pailles and Port-Louis as well as the Terre-Rouge-Verdun road. The launching of both projects is expected in 2008.
● When will the works end?
The works should take about four months night and day while trying not to perturb traffic too much. The project will cost Rs 55 million and is jointly financed by the RDA and the French government. According to the RDA, traffic jams have kept increasing for the past few years and have even extended outside peak hours. This is why such a project ? expected to solve the problem ? is so important.
