Tunisia?s coastguard rescued 35 African illegal migrants who lost their way trying to sail a boat to Italy from Libya, a security source said yesterday. The source said the migrants, from sub-Saharan Africa, had set sail from Libya in a small boat and were trying to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa but the motor broke down and the boat drifted off course. They were rescued on Friday. ?The coastguard hastened to the rescue after noticing a crowded boat with 35 migrants included one woman, near the coast of Sfax,? the source said, referring to a southern Tunisian town. Europe has urged North African countries to do more to stop the flows of illegal migrants trying to reach Europe via Italy and Spain, the two countries most migrants see as their preferred entry point into the continent. More than 31,000 illegal immigrants reached Spain?s Canary Islands last year, six times more than in 2005, and Italy and Malta were also targeted heavily. Many died on the journey. The EU has said it expects new flows of illegal migrants this year as the weather gets better.
