Seychelles parliamentary elections begin
Police officers, medics, and pilots were among the hundreds of citizens across the Seychelles who began voting in parliamentary elections yesterday.
The election gives President James Michel the opportunity to consolidate his power, after winning presidential elections on the Indian Ocean archipelago last year – two years after taking power from his predecessor of 27 years. “It is only fair he gets a fresh team of parliamentarians to sustain the new momentum of development that he has started,” a voter, Jude Louange told Reuters after casting his vote in the early morning warmth. In theory, the single-chamber parliament scrutinises all acts of law, but in practice has rarely rejected presidential legislation.
