● PARLIAMENT RESUMES TOMORROW. Both government and opposition are preparing for a busy session. The Sexual Offences Act should be one of the focal points. Sentences for rape will be more severe and could include the 60-year prison term announced by the prime minister, and remission, an issue which has brought a lot of controversy. The Competition Bill,to protect consumers and encourage sane competition, is also expected. The Landlord and Tenant Act 2005 and the Medical Council Act will be reviewed. The opposition is getting ready for this first sitting tomorrow and will tackle burning issues such as sewage and flood problems after cyclone Gamede, law and order and the sugar reform, among others.
● WHY HAS GOVERNMENT BACKED DOWN ON SC/HSC FEES? As the majority of students and parents were voicing out their anger over the abolition of the 50% subsidies on exam fees, the government decided to meet the citizens? platform and students to ?explain to them why it can?t continue subsidising the exam fees for everyone?. After the meeting, the PM, Navin Ramgoolam, expressed his wish to ?reach a consensus?. The cabinet discussed the matter on Friday and agreed to grant 25% subsidies to all those earning more than Rs 7,500.
● WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP NOW? WILL THERE BE ANY STRIKE? The citizens? platform considers that ?the struggle does not stop there?. Even though its members are in favour of the targeted approach, they do not want the measure to applied this year. The national platform, led by Yahya Paraoutty, acknowledges that this decision is a ?step in the right direction? but maintains the strike planned for the 30th March.
● WHAT HAS BEEN THE REACTION OF THE PLATFORM? Christian Lecordier, who said he was sure that the government would back-pedal and possibly grant a one-year moratorium before implementing the measure, expressed his disappointment with the cabinet decision. He has asked for a status quo for one year before the targeted approach be adopted. He thinks the government took this decision just to avoid a strike.
