Gamede leaves severe marks on the country. A positive consequence of the cyclone is the filling up of reservoirs. But the water has also caused much damage in some areas where the sewage system is not up to standard causing major floods. The sectors that have suffered the most are definitely agriculture and road infrastructure. Planters will soon obtain import permits from the government, as their vegetables will not be ready until May. As for the roads, Gamede has made the situation even worse and some Rs 100 million are needed to repair the network. The Sugar Efficiency Industry (Amendment) Bill voted. It took MPs until 3 a. m. to reach a consensus and adopt the Sugar Efficiency Industry Bill with amendments (those of the opposition were rejected). The bill is aimed at making the sugar industry profitable despite the 36% drop in sugar export prices. The European Union has asked for some guarantee before granting the country any compensation. During the parliamentary session, members of the opposition raised their voices: they accused the government of continuing the reform they has started while they were in power. Tough week for Kalyanee Juggoo. The week has been full of unpleasant developments for MP Kalyanee Juggoo. People living in her constituency (Port-Louis Nord-Montagne-Longue) took it out on her twice during the week. She was coming back from refuge centres in her constituency on Sunday when passers-by blocked the road and prevented her car from moving ahead. She and her family were stuck there for two hours before the police ? which she did not hesitate to criticise ? came to their ?rescue?. After she made a statement at the police station, inhabitants of the region protested in front of her house on Wednesday but the police finally managed to disperse the crowd.
