Dans une lettre commune, des parents d’élèves fréquentant la Mahatma Gandhi Secondary School de Flacq menacent de faire un sit-in en compagnie de leurs enfants si des problèmes d’infrastructure ne sont pas réglés dans les plus brefs délais. Ci-dessous la lettre :

“The MGSS is accomodating students from Form 1 to 5, a total of more than 600. This year is a very crucial year , since for the first time, Form 5 students will be sitting for the SC exams. The college is facing numerous problems, but the MGI head office and the Ministry of Education are adamant to those problems :

1. There is only one male and one female toilets for 600 students. Not at all sufficient. Students are queuing up to use these facilities. The new toilets blocks are still under construction since 2006. when it will be completed?

2. Form 5 students will be sitting for science exams. The Science Laboratory which was supposed to be completed in January 2007 is incomplete. The ministry and the MGI are hardly concerned, while in other colleges where there is no laboratory, students have been shifted to other colleges. what’s happening here ?

3. The space provided for the canteen is very small. 600 students for a 10x10 feet canteen? Incredible!!

4. While the ADSL is out of order, the MGI/Ministry are taking ages to repair. No proper follow-up and no commitment from the responsible persons.

5. There is no discipline at school. thefts and disrespect among students have become common. Students are seen smoking inside and outside school premises. Vulgar language is constantly being used .

6. The school is being considered a second category with less emphasis from MGI,with no playground, no recreation room, etc...

7. The parents of students are planning to meet the minister of Education as soon as possible. If immediate solutions are not found, they are planning to go for a sit-in and demonstration”.
