Two radio presenters in the sights of Adsu</B>
The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) arrested a 22 year-old radio presenter, Mohamud Fazil Ismaël, last Wednesday. They found a cannabis plant more than one metre tall as well as some drugs at his home in Palma, Quatre-Bornes. They are now looking for another presenter, Sanjeep Jatooa, who shares his home. Questioned by the police, the former said that the plant does not belong to him and that he only came to live at his colleague’s house after he left his parents’ home after a fight with them.
Family tragedy leads to one death</B>
A family fight ended in murder. Philippe Baptiste, 60, killed his stepson during a fight last Thursday in front of his wife. 21 year-old Pascal Labavarde was trying to intervene between his mother, Aurélie, and her husband after the latter had stabbed her twice on the left cheek. But Philippe was drunk and did not hesitate to stab Pascal. One hour after arriving in hospital, the latter died. The suspected murderer is still in hospital but the police say his life is not in danger. He is under strict police surveillance.

The defendant in an alleged rape case finally appeared in court last Friday after being absent on three occasions. The police had said in court that she could not be found anywhere. The defendant maintained that the police could have found her if they wanted to. This time, when she appeared in court, the magistrate warned her she had to be present on 5th April – when the case will be heard. She has accused Jérome Ferrat of having raped her twice after she accepted a lift home from him after a wedding reception. Jérome Ferrat has always denied the accusations, saying that she consented to sexual intercourse.
Rs 28 million in loss of earnings for MT</B>
The death of a Chinese expatriate in January has led the police to uncover a fraud of Rs 28 million. The Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) unveiled a network of illegal international calls with the collaboration of the IT Unit and members of the ICTA. Two shops in Port-Louis and Chebel were offering their services to expatriates from China and Taiwan to call abroad at far cheaper prices than Mauritius Telecom. This company is suspected of having cost MT Rs 28 million in loss of earnings. The manager of the fraudulent shops, Gérard Wong Fung Can, confessed to his crime and has been provisionally accused of operating an information and communication service without a licence.
