The attorney general, Rama Valayden, and the minister of Information and Communication Technologies, Etienne Sinatambou, are working together on a project to put an end to the growing number of mobile thefts. The measure will make the mobile unusable after the theft is reported to the authorities. Thanks to the registration number below the battery, the authorities will block the use of the mobile immediately. Hence, the mobiles are unusable and cannot be sold – the main reason for such thefts. This registration number already exists on mobile phones – except counterfeits – but the authorities cannot access these numbers. The difficulty will thus be for them to establish a link with mobile companies to get all registration numbers. But the attorney general is confident that the “project will be implemented within the next few months”.
