<B>Bus owners ask for ticket rise</B>
The Mauritius Bus Owners’ Co-operative Federation has written a letter to the minister of Transport, Rashid Beebeejaun, to ask for a rise in the price of bus tickets. Even though they did not give an exact amount, they believe the increase should be between Rs 8 and Rs 10. In view of the increases in maintenance fees and petrol prices – and subsidies that are far from enough – the companies say they fear they might not to be able to pay their employees in the future. They believe the government should increase the price of bus tickets while granting poor people a subsidy.
EU gives financial help for poor people</B>
The European Union (EU) has given a Rs 500 million grant to help fight poverty. This money will be included in the Programme of Decentralised Cooperation to help poor people out of their difficult situation. The potential beneficiaries will be community associations, associations for women and young people, vulnerable groups and trade unions, as well as small and medium enterprises. Rodrigues will also be involved in the programme. The first part of the project will request organisations to submit projects to help poor people. If chosen, these associations will obtain up to 75% of the total amount of their projects.
Sainte-Croix inhabitants fear more violence</B>
The inhabitants of Sainte-Croix are anxious. After the inauguration of a regional office for the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) in Plaine-Verte, a certain number of policemen who were initially in Sainte-Croix have been sent there. As a result, they fear a renewed outbreak of drug trafficking and violence in their region. The inhabitants of Sainte-Croix explain that the situation was already difficult with the number of policemen there before the latter were sent to Plaine-Verte; they are now wondering what will happen to their area with fewer policemen.
Vanessa Lagesse’s time of death, an issue</B>
The time of death of Vanessa Lagesse is considered as crucial for the defence. Ivan Collendavelloo, who is defending the main suspect in this case, Bernard Maigrot, is trying to obtain the authorisation from the court to have access to the personal notes of the police chief medical officer, Satish Boolell, taken when he did the autopsy. The latter said these notes were useful to establish the time of death. But the senior state counsel, Priya Cheetoo, firmly disagrees. She says the defense can question the witness, Dr Satish Boolell, at length, which makes it useless to examine his notes. The magistrate Azam Neerooa will have to give her ruling on the question.
