Who wants the head of Nirvan Veerasamy?
Air Mauritius is once again in turmoil. It is alleged that the national airline managing director, Nirvan Veerasamy, has been involved in his private businesses ever since he was appointed to his post to the detriment of Air Mauritius. Such allegations would not have astonished anyone if they had come from an opposition MP… But when it is a government backbencher who raises the question, the reasons appear quite strange.
Since Suren Dayal’s parliamentary question to minister Duval revealing that there might have been a conflict of interest between the Air Mauritius MD and his businesses, the main person concerned kept on denying all allegations so far.
Moreover, the day after this parliamentary session, the communication manager of Air Mauritius, Robert Alizart, revealed that Nirvan Veerasamy had insisted on giving explanations about his other businesses to the board. He declared, “If I am still here, this means I still benefit from the trust of the board which in turn enjoys the trust of all its shareholders.”
Nirvan Veerasamy appears confident that no one will be able to prove anything against him. The prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, also looks convinced of his innocence and will give his full support to the managing director of Air Mauritius.
Nothing to reproach himself for
The backbencher of the Social Alliance wanted to know if the minister of Tourism was informed that the agreement between Air Seychelles and Air Mauritius for the Mauritius-Seychelles-London route was no other than Captain Savy, the cofounder of Veiling with Nirvan Veerasamy.
However, Nirvan Veerasamy remains impassive and asserts he has nothing to reproach himself for. “This agreement had actually been initialed well before my arrival at the head of Air Mauritius by my predecessor Megh Pillay who did a wonderful job . I did nothing more than renew the agreement.” Moreover, he asserts that the company mentioned by Suren Dayal – of which he is still a shareholder – has never had any transactions with Air Mauritius.
Rumours that Nirvan Veerasamy was to leave Air Mauritius have actually been rife during the past few days. But the support shown by the prime minister since the case has started seems to prove them wrong.
Close to science-fiction
Nirvan Veerasamy is said to have “put” one of his relatives at the head of a recently established company that purchases spare parts for Air Mauritius aircraft. Moreover, other sources say that this relative has prevented Air France from purchasing spare parts for Air Mauritius, which has caused much anger among the French authorities. But the managing director of Air Mauritius finds the story close to “science fiction”.
Nirvan Veerasamy is adamant that he resigned from all the companies where he was director when he obtained the post at Air Mauritius and he intends to resume his activities only when his contract comes to an end. He is confident that the truth will finally triumph, “There are so many ‘garde-fous’ and audit committees at Air Mauritius that it will soon be clear whether I have been working for my own account to the detriment of Air Mauritius”.
But the Air Mauritius MD may still have problems to come. Labour MP Ram Mardaymootoo is making more allegations in Parliament today. He will ask explanations about a contract of several million rupees with US company Mc Kinsley. Other MPs are said to be working on the sale of four aircraft a few months ago.
Only time will tell if there is a conflict of interests or if the whole story is a result of the jealousy of certain people who have an interest in seeing the head of Air Mauritius vacate his job…
