Thirteen people were killed on a South African highway after a pickup truck slammed into the back of a minibus taxi which exploded into flames, Johannesburg emergency services said.

“All the bodies were burned beyond recognition ... The truck hit the taxi so hard from the rear that it was lodged half-way inside it,” said emergency services spokesman Malcolm Midgley.

Seven people including both drivers survived and were being treated in hospital for injuries after the accident this week-end on a highway southwest of Johannesburg.

Minibus taxis are often involved in accidents on South Africa’s notoriously dangerous roads as they tend to stop unexpectedly to pick up or drop off passengers.
