<B>Protect yourself!</B>
The cabinet continues to show much interest in the ?chikungunya? virus. Although it continues to reassure the population about the low number of people affected (341 cases between 23 December 2005 and 17 February 2006), it insists on the precautions to be taken to contain the spread of the disease. All measures are aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and raising awareness among the public. ?A monitoring team has been set up to carry out random checks and submit daily reports to ensure that the fogging, spraying and larviciding programmes are implemented as planned,? reports the cabinet. The ministry has also requested that all hospital wards and health offices are equipped with mosquito repellents and coils. This programme has been extended to schools where responsible officers must make sure that coils and mosquito repellents are used as a preventive measure. Specialised radio and television programmes in Creole and Bhojpuri are broadcast on measures to be taken, particularly cleaning up places where water has collected, especially on roofs, appropriate disposal of used tyres, tins and cans. Last week, the minister of Health, Satish Faugoo, was in Triolet where he visited a number of people affected by the disease. He wanted to reassure the public that the government is committed to eliminating the ?chikungunya? virus but insisted that the population should not panic and believe that fever automatically means ?chikungunya?!

Before getting out of one problem, Prem Raddhoa is already involved in another. Gérard Jolicoeur, suspected of having something to do with the murder of Vanessa Pouronne, found in a sugar cane field in Roches-Brunes, has accused Raddhoa and members of the Major Crime Investigation Team (Mcit) of brutality. His lawyer, Jean-Claude Bibi, has written to the Human Rights Commission to state that his client?s body was covered with bruises. He has asked the commission to prevent MCIT members from dealing with his client in the future and wants the latter?s release on bail. According to Gérard Jolicoeur, he was beaten on the day of his arrest in an ?unknown place? before being taken to the MCIT office in Curepipe where Prem Raddhoa insulted him. He also asserted that MCIT members threatened him with the same fate as the ?man from Lallmatie?.
