The rare Icac bird has been found
The hunt for the right man to head the anti-corruption commission has finally proved successful. The government has appointed former senior magistrate of Rose-Hill district court, Anil Kumar Ujoodha, as the new director of the Independent Commission against Corruption (Icac).
Since the Prevention of Corruption Act was amended and the three commissioners given the sack last September, the government had been looking around. With the specific criteria that the opposition requested for this job, the task appeared even more difficult. The government offered the post to Senior Puisne judge, Bernard Sik Yuen, as well as to judge Bushan Domah, but both declined the offer for the same reasons: they could not go back to the judiciary at the end of their contract.
The appointment of the former senior magistrate last Friday has been warmly welcomed by the legal profession. He is considered as very ?human rights oriented?. Lawyer Yousuf Mohamed praised the newly appointed director: ?He has proved to be a good magistrate. I am convinced he can do very well.?
