This week, 25 artists from nine countries, including Mauritius, have come together to create works of art from different materials. The department of Fine Arts of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute is holding a workshop in printmaking. This event, which started on the 6th will lead to an exhibition on Friday 13th.

“Printmaking is a medium with the possibility of enriching artworks,” explained Mala Ramyead Chummun, head of department of Fine Arts at the launching ceremony last Friday. Artists from America, Luxembourg, India, Estonia, USA, England… are present for a demonstration of the various ways of sculpting a chef d’oeuvre out of materials such as wood, zinc and lino. Printmaking consists of techniques such as etching, aquatint, serigraphy, colography or woodcuts.

Even if the public is not admitted to the morning workshops, lovers of art are welcome in the evening seminars by the artists as from 6 pm at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. The programme for tonight is quite interesting. Thuraya Al-Baqsami from Kuwait will host a debate on“The three taboos in the work of Arab female artists” from 6 pm to 7 pm.

Several artists will discuss their production in the field of printmaking such as Eve Kask from Estonia who will talk about the Triennal of Talinn. Tomorrow it will be the turn of Neermala Luckeenarain to give an overview of printmaking in Mauritius.
