<B>Labourer accuses friend of sodomy</B>

A 47 year-old labourer made a statement to the police to the effect that he had been sodomised by a 23 year-old mason. The latter has denied all the accusations. After the labourer had a row with his wife because of his liking for alcohol, he left his home and slept at a relative’s place. The day after, as he was going home, he met the mason who proposed that they should get together for a drink. After buying a bottle of rum, both went to the mason’s house and started drinking. The labourer decided to go back home, but the mason invited him to stay over. While they were sharing a mattress in the kitchen, the labourer asserts he was sexually abused.

Exorcising past pains</B>

A Commission of Justice and Truth is to be set up by the attorney general by 10th December to shed some light on the death of Kaya and Rajen Sabapathee. The goal of such a commission is different from that of a commission of inquiry. It aims not at punishing but at finding the truth. Although no details on the attributions of the commission have leaked out, it seems it will be like the one in South Africa at the end of apartheid. People could be granted amnesty for their actions if they tell the truth.

Increased cost of «fitness»</B>

The cost of fitness (technical control) for all vehicles will be increased soon. The Cabinet announced the decision but did not reveal the new fee. Although no officials of the ministry of Public infrastructure have confirmed this, people involved in the business say the fitness fee for a car could go from Rs 100 to Rs 300. Such an increase would bring Rs 60 million to the state compared to Rs 20 million at the moment. But, before implementing such a measure, the fitness centres should first be modernised and organised so that vehicle owners waste less time waiting for their test.

For a better hawkers’ palace</B>

The mayor of Port-Louis, Reza Issack, made it clear that the Hawkers Palace project will be changed for the better. The new infrastructure is aimed at reducing the number of hawkers in public areas. Hawkers will be given a special area at Ruisseau-du-Pouce; a pedestrian zone will be set up and the project will also involve parking facilities. “In fact, we have abided by what was planned but we have tried to improve on the initial project as we realised the hawkers were not really keen on it,” explained the mayor of Port-Louis.
