Customs chief will not quit without a fight
The customs comptroller, Bert Cunningham, has decided not to give in to the customs officers’ lobby to oust him. He insists he has to “clean the kitchen” and he is standing as candidate for the post of director of customs under the new Mauritius Revenue Authority.
Although the government asked him to remain in office after his contract expired in October, the customs unions have been trying to prevent him from staying in this post. The government is satisfied with the way he has managed the department as he has brought Rs 1 billion into the state’s coffers. The unions have taken the customs comptroller to the Supreme Court but their case was rejected.
As for Bert Cunningham, he believes that the lobby is made up of only a minority of officers and that the majority agrees with the way he has done his job in the best interests of both the customs department and the country. But he doesn’t intend to “leave the customs in the hands of people who have the same attitudes and approach as the mafia gangs in some areas of the United States.” With this in mind, Bert Cunningham has decided to fight to remain at the head of the customs department.
