Sangeet JOOSERY President of Mauritius Family Planning Association

One of the ways for women to avoid unwanted pregnancies is the contraceptive pill. It has been said recently that it is carcinogenic. Has this been proved?

We should be very careful in our statement. While we should consider results from studies, we should also know how to use findings. These can be interpreted differently by different people at different periods of time. In addition, findings, which are true at a particular period of time and in a particular environment, cannot be true all the time and in all environments. All chemical products have side effects and contra-indications. We should consider all these when we use them. Those predisposed to a certain illness or disease, like cancer, heart problems and allergies should not use contraceptive pills without medical advice. It does not mean that pills provoke all types of illnesses.

What should women do to avoid cancer risks if they want to take the pill?

Women should take the pill on the advice of their doctors. It is imperative that a medical check-up be conducted before using the pill. Unfortunately many women, especially in Mauritius, do not have the habit of regular medical check-ups. In fact, people go to the doctor only when they feel sick and with symptoms of illness. Medical check-ups need to be regular. People on drugs should continuously follow up with their doctors to ensure that there are no complications.

What are the exact dangers of contraceptive pills for women?s health and their ability to have children when they want to?

Contraceptive pills do not have dangers but contra-indications. They are not advisable for women who have cardiovascular diseases, are heavy smokers, have diabetes and a past history of vascular disease and high blood pressure. However, they have many advantages. They are highly effective and have excellent reversibility. When their intake is stopped, fertility is restored immediately. They prevent ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, endometriosis and growth of uterine fibroids. They decrease menstrual cramps and pain as well as menstrual bleeding.
