Cyber hotel in the making

Ebene cybercity willhave a hotel forbusinessmen as from March 2007. Although this project was planned when the cybercity opened in 2001, it never took off. It now appears as a must anda consortium of businessmen have got together to build the new hotel. The City Business Hotel will include all facilities for businessmen as well as a relaxing corner with a spa,a fitness centre and two pools. The hotel will have two restaurants also open to Mauritians. Rs 500 million will be invested and construction works start next January.

Mauritius involved in tsunami alert

Mauritius has been appointed as vice-president of the intergovernmental coordination group working on the tsunami alert system. Subharaj Sok Appadu, the director of the meteorological services, was the Mauritian representative in Perth at a UN meeting held to discuss the setting up of the alert system. Specialists said the alert system would have to ally technology and an emergency plan.

Defence criticises police in Air Mauritius case

In the Air Mauritius case, which started in March 2004, the defence has asked for a stay of proceedings on the grounds of abuse of process. The main problem is that the police asked for ?further statements? from witnesses even after the hearings of the case had started. In that context, the defence consider their clients have not had a fair hearing. Sir Harry Tirvengadum, the former CEO of Air Mauritius as well as three managers of Rogers ? Derek Taylor, Robert Rivalland and Joseph Yip Tong ? have been charged with conspiracy to defraud Air Mauritius of the sum of Rs 85 million. The prosecution insisted that the police are not on trial. The court will give its ruling on 22nd September.

The seafood hub takes off

Five new companies will invest in the seafood hub. Fifteen firms are already engaged in this sector. It seems that investors trust one of the newest economic sectors of Mauritius.

An European firm wants to deal with the export of sturgeon to Europe, R.E Holdings (Mauritius) intends to process tuna and swordfish, MTC Seafood Ltd will soon start its tuna exports towards USA, Japan and Europe,Au Fil de L?Eau will start fishing shrimps while Casamar should start repairing nets for fishing boats.
