The attorney general warned that he would not leave investigations pending when he came to power. Rama Valayden has kept his commitment regarding one of the most mysterious cases that has ever occurred in Mauritius. Any person who has information that might elucidate the Bassin-Blanc tragedy will be rewarded with Rs 300,000 if he/she accepts to help the police.

The case dates from 2002 (11th November) when the bodies of Tagoressing Sandooram and Hansi Ittoo were found in Bassin-Blanc. The two lovers had disappeared for several days before their bodies were fished out of the lake. At the beginning of the enquiry, investigators thought it was a suicide case. The police had seen messages on the victims’ cell phones. These had led the investigators to believe the lovers were about to split up – which could have been a reason to commit suicide.

However, other details made some investigators somewhat doubt this theory. The attitudes of the victims did not hint that they might be contemplating suicide. Tagoressing Sandooram had planned some projects for the coming weeks including a trip abroad.

The forensic scientist also stated that death was due to brain haemorrhage. He had also noticed that the victims had bruises on their scalps and bodies. Soon after their bodies were discovered, biological samples of the victims were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to be analysed. A sum of Rs 100,000 had already been offered by the families for information at the beginning of the enquiry but this hadn’t proved successful.
