Cuttaree back from lobbying campaign
The Mauritian candidate for the post of director general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is back. Jayen Cuttaree, the minister of Foreign affairs, is so far confident that he?ll get through in the first round. He was in Geneva for a lobbying campaign with some European countries, which have not made their choice yet. The first series of consultations took place there with a certain number of WTO members to know what their stand is so far.
Although he already benefits from the support of important WTO groups of members ? the African Union, the Southern African Development Community, India and South Africa ? Jayen Cuttaree continues his lobbying. Actually, he explains that Mauritius has to keep on fighting. ?For this reason, there had to be an important coordination between Geneva and our embassy in Brussels in order to make sure that their accredited representative could come and vote in Geneva.? In the meantime Vijay Makhan, the Foreign affairs secretary, was in Adis Ababa to coordinate the support of the African Union to that effect.
The final decision should be made at the end of May by the General Council. Until then, the candidates will gradually fall out of the race for the appointment. Cuttaree?s most serious competitor remains EU commissioner Pascal Lamy as stated by many Western newspapers over the last few weeks. But the Latin Americans ? Carlos Perez Del Castillo (Uruguay) and Luiz Felipe de Seixas Correa (Brasil) - have not given up yet. The race goes on until the end of next month?
