Australia PM torn over support in British election
Australia?s Prime Minister John Howard is torn between his support for Iraq-war ally British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his affinity with the conservative politics ahead of Britain?s expected general election in May. Howard, whose conservative government won a fourth straight term at an Oct. 9 election, said yesterday that if Blair?s Labour government was re-elected the ballot would be seen as further endorsement of the US-led war on Iraq. ?I am conflicted when it comes to the British election,? Howard said.
?I really wish Tony Blair well because he?s been extremely courageous, leaving personalities and particular policies aside -- naturally my longer term affinities are with the other side in Great Britain.? He said Blair had faced more internal opposition to the Iraq war than himself or US President George W. Bush, who was returned to power for a second term at a Nov. 2 election.
?I think of the three of us he had the most difficult internal task in relation to Iraq because his party was deeply divided and a large section of his party was openly hostile to his decision,? Howard told Australian radio. ?He took that on and fought it and overwhelmed it, that wasn?t easy, but he did it out of conviction ... He really believed and still believes very strongly in the correctness of the decision.?
