Felix has seen the world; he has been on the move for the past ten years and yet, he is constantly bemused and amazed by what he calls the ?incredible politeness? of the Mauritian people. ?Sometimes it makes you wonder. If it?s like this here, what would it be like in Heaven??

Oh no, Felix is not being overly fanatical about the place he?s been calling ?home? for two years now. This is what he genuinely sees around him. He has observed other things too: a country that is not being developed to the best of its capacity.

Felix Ofulue is not a man easily flustered. Yet he feels frustrated at not being able to shop or service his car on a Sunday, for instance. The fact that businesses operate on a too-structured basis here baffles him. ?For such a touristy place, businesses in this country are not making the most of the opportunity to expand the service-based sector on a 24-hour basis. The potential and the market both exist.?

Another area of bewilderment is the fact that ?this country should have the world at its feet, with most people speaking at least two international languages.? It doesn?t and this is for him an anticlimax as ?this aspect excites me, the potential that it speaks for the economy is unlimited.?

Not a big fan of food as such, Felix has nevertheless made a discovery. Akara, the childhood street food he used to buy in his hometown Lagos, is sold here, under a different name? gato pima.

Felix?s favorite spot is Flic-en-Flac, where he lives with his wife and two sons. ?The kids love the place. I can leave them and go about my business abroad without any worry. This place is secure.? Grand-Bay is another favorite. ?So cosmopolitan, reminds me of Lagos.?

Local politics doesn?t interest the Coca Cola Region marketing manager; he would rather talk of the social harmony between communities he?s discovered here. Asked if he thinks this harmony is genuine or just a smokescreen, Felix feels he does not know the society enough to pass judgment. ?Ask my wife; she goes to the market. So far, she?s impressed.?

A literature lover, Felix had for teacher none other than Chinua Achebe, the world famous novelist who has helped to bring Nigeria to life in the minds of so many people. ?Nigeria is my home, where my roots are, and it has a pulling force,? says Felix.

Felix Ofulue will probably leave Mauritius next year ?without regrets?, as his home is where his heart is and that?s Lagos - but he wouldn?t mind retiring to Mauritius when he ends his hectic marketing career, which has taken him to New York, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Somalia, Reunion Island, the Seychelles, the Comoros and Mayotte, among others. Next stop? ?I don?t know. Wherever,? he says with a big smile. Mauritius again? ?Whenever,? he adds, still smiling.
