The star and key of the Indian Ocean? After 36 years of Independence, Mauritius is now on the threshold of a new challenge ? the cyber world. Since 1968, the country has constantly stumbled through different wakes to reach this standpoint. The sense of achievement is definitely felt through the socio-economic development, though the path of completion is yet to be defined.

Having inherited a rich history, the country is striving hard to forge its identity. Although its economic status has imposed itself successfully among African countries, yet its integral profile often remains a subject of debate and uncertainty. Rising among the African nations as the prodigy country, Mauritius has been humbly sharing its skills. On the other hand, we are dependent on other countries for know-how and financing. As a stakeholder in regional and international organisations, our country is a favourable recipient of various openings. Consequently, other transactions are modified to fit the parameters of these organisations. These are inevitable adjustments in this wave of globalisation.

From the swaying green sugarcane fields, the main focus of the economy has boldly shifted to textiles and is now aiming at ICT. Development has entailed major social changes. The mushrooming of educational institutions, the million-smelling infrastructure development and the revolution in the world of media and ICT speak of the futuristic - though unsteady - approach that Mauritius is precariously adopting. It is a fact that the steps taken by the country are hostages of political decisions, so much so that each twist in education, the backbone of development, faces the humour of the political manifesto. Proudly calling itself an example of democracy, Mauritius has easily adapted to these intricacies and emerged as a success story.

By our historical inheritance, we are proud members of a multicultural and multilingual society. We have tried to give a wide range of definitions to ?Mauritian culture? within a flexible image of togetherness. The sense of solidarity is more outlined during great national events and catastrophes. ?We do not need to wait for major disasters like a cyclone or an epidemic to show solidarity towards each other. Issues of national solidarity should be highlighted because these are issues where we all feel for each other?, said Dr. Satish Boolell, the recipient of the Millenium National Unity Award. Indeed, the lack of sustained solidarity is strongly felt but surely worked upon by the concerned quarters.

The physical soothing beauty is believed to reflect the social canvas. While ensuring the safety of locals and visitors, the numerous laws are expected to safeguard the rights of all. Nevertheless, we have not been spared fast spreading social diseases. Today, some problems are taking important proportions and becoming a subject of concern for the authorities.

?As one people, as one nation?? ? this self-congratulatory slogan has inspired many and perhaps explains the admirable patience of a Mauritian population ready to accept and adjust to changes and challenges. Our pride lies in our endeavour to become competent citizens of the world.
