Still a “highway” to go…
The contention between the government and Nature Watch on the possible preservation of Ferney valley… goes on as the bulldozers make room for the new South-Eastern highway. The non-governmental organisation (NGO) has gone back to the Supreme Court asking for an order to stop the works. But the Court will give its ruling on 27th September only. Will the forest be spared from the bulldozers until then?
Nature Watch had another meeting with the Seeballuck committee, responsible for the Ferney issue, but it has far from met the NGO’s expectations. On the contrary, the committee confirmed that the highway would go through the valley according to plan.
The former government had stopped all the works when the ecologists had gone to court. They had hoped it would have been the same this time but it has not been the case. The deputy PM and minister of Public Infrastructure, Rashid Beebeejaun, declared that the bulldozers were only 2 kilometres from the forest.
This is contrary to all promises made by the then opposition leader, Navin Ramgoolam during the electoral campaign. “On 4th July, works in Ferney forest will stop,” were his exact words. Nature Watch had thus decided not to sue the State when the PM reiterated his promise after being elected. But nothing happened.
George Ah-Yan, president of the Mahebourg Citizens Welfare Organisation, is as determined as Nature Watch. He warned that he would do everything to stop the destruction of the flora and fauna – including a human shield in front of the forest to protect the trees.
