Le gouvernement entreprend un plan de remorquage d’une partie du Wakashio

Dans un communiqué émis le samedi 15 aoout,  le National Crisis Committee annonce qu’un plan de remorquage d’une partie du Wakashio était en train d’être élaboré sous la supervision du Salvage Master et de l’International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Ltd (ITOPF).

UPDATE ON INCIDENT INVOLVING WAKASHIO VESSEL AS AT 6PM ON AUGUST 15, 2020

 

  1. At around 5am on August 15, 2020, the Salvage Master reported that the condition of MV Wakashio was worsening and it could break at any time. Indeed, on the same day at around 4.30pm, a major detachment of the vessel’s forward section was observed.

 

  1. On the basis of the experts’ advice, the towing plan is being implemented under the supervision of the Salvage Master and the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Ltd (ITOPF).

 

  1. All the necessary precautions are being taken, including the positioning of National Coast Guard crafts and personnel around the vessel to respond to the actual situation.

 

  1. Booms deployment around MV Wakashio have been strengthened since 7am on August 15, 2020, with an additional of 600 meters of equipment in the lagoon. Skimmers are on stand-by mode near the vessel and will intervene as and when required.

 

  1. According to the Mauritius Meteorological Services, the weather is going to worsen over the coming days with waves reaching a maximum height of 4.5 meters.

 

  1. Special attention is being given to sensitive sites such as the Blue Bay Marine Park, Ile aux Aigrettes and the Pointe D’Esny National Ramsar Site.

 

  1. Discussions were held during the morning of August 15, 2020, with foreign experts with regards to the action plan for the cleaning of affected sites and to the subsequent rehabilitation of the marine and coastal ecosystem of the region.

 

  1. The Government of Mauritius is receiving additional expert’s assistance from different friendly countries to face the ecological challenge.

 

  1. Local experts will be teamed with international experts in view to pursuing rehabilitation works, capacity building and ensuring follow up actions.

 

  1. All stakeholders, including the private sector and NGO’s, are being fully engaged in the formulation and the execution of the clean-up and rehabilitation plan.

 

  1. Around 814 metric tons of oil liquid waste, 318 metric tons of solid waste sludge and contaminated debris, and 250 cubic metres of saturated artisanal booms have been collected as at mid-day on 15 August 2020.
