Olivia Kirtley: “The accountancy profession can assist in Africa’s economic growth”
In Mauritius for the ACOA 2015 conference, a gathering of accountancy professionals from across Africa, she presents this congress as a leading venue to propose reforms that the accounting profession can implement in partnership with public and private sector institutions to accelerate economic growth on the continent.
In that field, in order to maintain a strong economic growth trajectory, she points out that many countries need to strengthen institutions; develop capacity to improve investment-project selection, execution, and monitoring; facilitate and increase cross-border transactions; adopt and implement international standards as well as establish independent audit regulators; and encourage transparency and accountability in the use of public resources.
Professional accountants and the profession as a whole, she adds, have a critical role to play as both trusted advisors to governments and stewards of the public interest in ensuring Africa’s economic growth, and that this growth improves the lives of all Africans.
